TRICENTENARI
How can we redefine the notion of identity in the era of globalization? It seems that instead of a static image or absolute identity, the identities of our time is a very dynamic concept that constantly assimilate and react to each other. So we come to the identity of Catalunya through an alternative lens, a constant dialogue back and forth between Urbanus (outsider) and ETSALS (insider), creating new inspirations and unplanned consequences at the end of the design process.
Catalunya is a small state that has gone through a lot and done a lot to preserve its identity over the past 300 years. The pavilion IDENTITY divides the current two large square, recovering ancient square in 1714 and showing the evolution of the Roman arch Catalan vault. The new pavilion generates a new meeting point in the city, a place of congregation and exchange which will host various activities showing Catalan identity.
A system abstraction traditional Catalan vault clay configured space. The use of small pieces of bamboo so cohesive structural gets great distances. The cohesive nature of this system reduces the need to shore, and this eliminates the need for temporary supports. It also allows the creation of a cross structure with a thickness of only 10 mm, using standard pieces of bamboo, industrially produced and brought from China. This type of construction system shares similarities with conceptual structures Towers as “building cohesive” in which different individuals join together with a common purpose end.
